Restore the Strength of Your Smile with a Tooth-Colored Filling

A dental filling is used to restore a tooth damaged by decay. At H&M Family Dentistry in Aurora, CO, we provide tooth-colored dental fillings made from a composite resin material, rather than traditional silver amalgam. Dr. Hua Gao and Dr. Xiaomei Sui can match the color of the filling to the shade of your natural tooth, making it virtually invisible. In addition to the cosmetic benefits, composite resin also forms a stronger bond with the tooth than amalgam and protects the long-term integrity of the enamel.

When a Filling Is Necessary

In general, any patient with mild to moderate tooth decay can benefit from a dental filling. During your regular, biannual appointment at our office, Dr. Gao or Sui can check your teeth for any signs of decay. By treating a cavity in the early stages, you can prevent more widespread damage. Serious infections stemming from deep decay generally require root canal therapy and a dental crown to restore the tooth.

The Benefits of Composite

Tooth-colored fillings offer a number of benefits over traditional metal fillings, such as:

  • More attractive appearance
  • Stronger bond
  • More conservative treatment
  • Less post-treatment sensitivity and pain

Fillings made from composite resin are also more stable than their metal counterparts. Temperature changes can cause silver fillings to expand and contract, endangering the structure of your tooth. In contrast, composite materials strengthen your tooth and can improve your oral health for years to come.

The Filling Process

If Dr. Gao or Sui identifies a cavity, they will first numb the tooth and surrounding area with local anesthetic. Then they will clean out decay, remove compromised tissue, and apply the composite solution to fill the tooth.

Once your tooth is filled, Dr. Gao or Sui will use a specialized ultraviolet (UV) light to harden the material. They can then adjust the size and shape of the bonding material to perfect your bite and ensure you are comfortable with the result.

Caring for Your Dental Filling

It is important to maintain a consistent oral health routine to care for your filling and prevent decay from returning. Brush your teeth twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste and floss at least once daily. We recommend using a fluoride mouthwash as well to strengthen your enamel and prevent additional cavities.

By receiving a tooth-colored filling at H&M Family Dentistry, you can prevent the spread of infection and protect your oral, as well as your overall, health.

You should also attend regular cleaning and exam appointments at our office so Dr. Gao or Sui can monitor the structure of your filling. These steps can help maintain the color and appearance of your filling and keep your teeth clean so further dental work is not required. If you experience extreme sensitivity or notice changes to your treated tooth, contact our office right away as these may be signs of complications.
